The Hawaii school district or the Hawaii Department of Education, is the only statewide public education system in the United States. Established by Kamehameha III on October 15, 1840, it is the oldest school system west of the Mississippi River and the only system established by a sovereign monarch. The Hawaii State Department of Education is a single, statewide school district with 289 schools (256 regular, two special, 31 charter) plus 11 adult education schools on seven islands.[1] Approximately 180,000 students attend school in Hawaii, and the department employs about 13,000 teachers.[2] The DOE formulates policy for the public schools and the Hawaii state library system.
