There are approximately 390 justice of the peace courts in Louisiana. These courts have limited jurisdiction over certain types of civil cases such as tort, contract, real property rights (up to $3,000) and small claims (up to $2,000). They share jurisdiction over some civil cases with the district courts. They also handle certain types of non-felony criminal cases involving traffic and other violations. They cannot, however, hear cases involving real estate suits, the right to public office, divorce proceedings, executory proceedings or suits against public bodies. They hold preliminary hearings for most criminal cases, but they do not hold jury trials.[1][2]
