Heileson grew up in Iona, Idaho. After high school Heileson joined the National Guard and spent seven months in active duty stateside followed by four years in the active reserve. He also served a one year tour of duty in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He attended Ricks College and received a bachelor's in political science from Brigham Young University.
Heileson ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House to represent Idaho's 2nd District. Heileson was defeated in seeking the nomination on the Republican ticket. Heileson faces incumbent Mike Simpson and John Baird in the Republican primary. Nicole LeFavour defeated Jack Wayne Chappell in the Democratic primary. Candidates wishing to run were required to file by the signature filing deadline of March 9, 2012. The primary elections were held on May 15, 2012.
