Campaign themes

2012

Hutchison's 2012 platform consisted of:[3]

  • Working Hard to Create Jobs: ."..Mark will work to diversify Nevada’s economy, encourage hi-tech companies to locate here, and invest in the future, but he also understands that Nevadans are suffering today. Mark supports extending tax breaks for 115,000 small businesses to foster economic growth and will work to create new jobs in the construction and tourism industries."
  • Focusing on Education: ."..We need to focus on core subjects – reading, writing, math, science and history. Mark supports giving parents the option to choose schools that are right for their children. He will work to improve public education by advocating for students – not entrenched bureaucracy – shifting cost-savings directly to the classroom, and cutting the education bureaucracy and using the money saved to hire more teachers and reduce class size."
  • Bringing More Value to Government: ."..[Hutchison] will fight to prudently use hard-earned tax dollars, cut irresponsible spending, promote fiscal responsibility, and ensure our state government lives within a balanced budget."
  • Defending Nevadans' Rights: Hutchison's website cites his role as the state's counsel in the federal lawsuit challenging the Affordable Care Act as "defending Nevadans' rights to decide for themselves what products they wish to buy...."

Scorecards

Legislative scorecards are used to evaluate elected public officials based on voting record. Some scorecards are created by political advocacy groups with a focus on specific issues, while others are developed by newspapers and are broad in scope. Scorecards are meant to be used as a tool for voters to have a quick picture of whether their views align with a particular legislator's record.

Because scorecards can be specific to particular issues or general to a state’s legislative term, for example, each report should be considered on its own merits. Each entity that publishes these reports uses different methodologies and definitions for the terms used.

An overview for scorecards in all 50 states can be found on this page. To contribute to the list of Nevada scorecards, email suggestions to scorecards@ballotpedia.org.
