Martha Deutsch is an incumbent member of and was a candidate for an at-large seat on the Torrance Unified School District Board of Trustees that was up for general election on November 5, 2013. She was appointed to the board in December 2012.

Biography

Martha Deutsch is volunteer that has served as a Spanish bi-lingual assistant and teacher for after school programs. She has served on the ExxonMobil Community Advisory Panel, Torrance Education Foundation board and two school site councils. She is also the mother of two children that are currently attending or graduated from TUSD.[1]

Martha Deutsch ran against three other candidates including incumbents Mark Steffen and Michael Patrick Wermers as well as challenger John Paul Tabakian.[2]

Demographics

Torrance outperforms the rest of California when measured on the basis of median household income, percentage of residents living below the poverty level, percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a Bachelor's degree and percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a high school diploma. The median household income in Torrance was $75,885 compared to $61,632 for the state of California. 43.7% of Torrance residents aged 25 years and older attained a bachelor's degree compared to a 30.2 in California. The US Census also showed the poverty rate in Torrance was 7.2% compared to 14.4% for the entire state. The US Census also found that 92.5% of Torrance residents aged 25 years and older attained a high school degree compared to a 80.8% in California.[6]
