Ekstrom is the office manager of Hanson Runsvold Funeral Home. She was the owner and designer of Ekstrom & Associates Architects & Planners from 1975-2005 and has been an Alumni Coordinator for North Dakota State University, Department of Architecture and Landscape Architect since 2005.
Ekstrom is widowed and has three children; Lisa, Rik, and Ingrid.
In February 2010, Ekstrom announced that she would not be running for re-election. She stated that it's become too difficult to manage her job as an office manager for a funeral home with serving in the legislature.
