Mary Haffner is an incumbent board member on the Ventura Unified School District Board of Trustees that was up for general election on November 5, 2013.

Biography

Mary Haffner is an attorney that has lived in Ventura since 1991. She is married to her husband Matthew and they have three children that attend Ventura Unified schools. Mary and Matthew are partners in a Ventura law firm, Haffner, Haffner & Kirwin. Haffner earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of California: Santa Barbara and her J.D. from Loyola Law School.[1]

Opposition

Mary Haffner ran against two other candidates, fellow incumbents John B. Walker and Velma L. Lomax for three seats in the general election on November 5, 2013. With only the three incumbent candidates filing for the positions, the election was canceled and removed from the ballot.

Ventura Unified School District is located in Ventura County, California in San Buenaventura, California. According to the 2010 Census, it is home to 106,433 residents.[2]

Demographics

San Buenaventura outperforms the rest of California when measured on the basis of median household income, percentage of residents living below the poverty level, percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a Bachelor's degree and percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a high school diploma. The median household income in San Buenaventura was $66,226 compared to $61,632 for the state of California. 31.6% of San Buenaventura residents aged 25 years and older attained a Bachelor's degree compared to a 30.2 in California. The US Census also showed the poverty rate in San Buenaventura was 10.5% compared to 14.4% for the entire state. The United States Census also found that 87.8% of San Buenaventura residents aged 25 years and older attained a high school degree compared to a 80.8% in California.[3]
