The Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources is a state executive position in the Maryland state government. The secretary serves as head of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and is responsible for overseeing the preservation, development and use of Maryland's natural resources.[1] The secretary is a nonpartisan appointee of the Maryland Governor.

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Mark Belton. He was appointed by Gov. Larry Hogan (R) and sworn in March 27, 2015, following his confirmed by the state senate. Belton replaced Joseph Gill, an appointee of Hogan's predecessor Martin O'Malley (D).[2][3]

Authority

The Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources's powers, term of office, etc. are derived from the Natural Resources Article in the Maryland Code of Public General Laws.

(a) There is a Department of Natural Resources, established as a principal department of the State government. The head of the Department is the Secretary of Natural Resources,...[4]

Qualifications

Section 1-101 of the Natural Resources Article of the Maryland Code of Public General Laws establishes the qualifications of the office:

...The Secretary shall be an individual with administrative ability, whose reputation and experience demonstrate his interest in the field of natural resources.[5]

The Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources is appointed by the Governor of Maryland, with the advice and consent of the Maryland State Senate.

Duties

The department coordinates all natural resources activities within the state and reviews and evaluates all natural resources policies, plans, programs and practices of county, state, regional and federal agencies and institutions.[6]
