Zero ballot measures have been certified for the 2014 ballot in the state of Massachusetts.

Historical facts

  • Since 1990, an average of 4 measures have appeared annually on the ballot in Massachusetts. Therefore, 2014 is a below average year based on the currently certified measures.
  • The number of measures on a state-wide ballot since 1990 have ranged from 1 to 8.
  • Since 1990, 25 of 46 or 54.35% of Massachusetts ballot measures have been approved by voters.
  • Conversely, 21 of 46 or 45.65% of measures have been defeated.

Potential measures

Seven ballot measures may appear on the ballot in 2014.

Supporters of the seven initiated state statutes must each gather a total of 80,396 over two circulation periods. In period one, petitioners needed to gather 68,911 valid signatures by November 20, 2013 and submit these to them to local registrars for certification. Next, all seven potential were submitted to the secretary of state, who confirmed the measures had each garnered enough signatures, thereby completing phase one.[1] Now, the Massachusetts Legislature has until the May 7, 2014 to address the initiated statutes. If the legislature does not adopt the given initiative, then supporters have until July 2, 2014 to submit an additional 11,485 signatures to place the measure on the ballot for constituents to vote on at the November 4, 2014 general election.[2]

The following measures will not appear on the 2014 ballot. Two measure, one on corporate personhood and one regarding GMOs, were not certified by the Office of the Attorney General and thus were ineligible to appear on the ballot. Seven others failed to file signatures with the Secretary of State by the necessary date.
