The Massachusetts State Auditor is a state executive position in the Massachusetts state government. The auditor's office is responsible for conducting financial, performance and technical audits of state programs, departments, agencies and other uses of public money.
The office of the state auditor is established by Part I, Title II, Chapter 11, Section 1 of the General Laws of Massachusetts:
|There shall be a department to be known as the department of the state auditor under his supervision and control, organized as provided in this chapter.|
According to Article XVII of the Massachusetts Constitution, an executive officer of the commonwealth must "have been an inhabitant of this commonwealth five years next preceding his election or appointment."
Massachusetts elects auditors in the midterm elections, that is, even years that are not presidential election years. For Massachusetts, 2018, 2022, 2026 and 2030 are all auditor election years.

To these ends, the office conducts financial, performance, and technical assessments of programs, departments, agencies, authorities, contracts, and vendors. While these audits and reports may uncover problems and issues, they also contain recommendations to improve accountability, efficiency, and transparency, making state government work better for the citizens of the commonwealth.
