Smith was a 2011 Democratic candidate for District 39 of the Mississippi State Senate. He lost in the primary election to W.L. Rayburn.


Smith is a retired firefighter. He has worked as a lobbyist with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, National Forest Service, and Department of Environmental Quality.
