The director serves alongside the Michigan Natural Resources Commission, a seven member public body appointed by the Governor.
As head of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the director supervises the department, which is responsible for promoting outdoor recreational opportunities, wildlife and fisheries management, forest management, state land and minerals, state parks and recreation areas, and conservation and law enforcement.
The Director of Natural Resources is established in the Michigan Compiled Laws.

|Transfer of powers and duties of the commission of natural resources, the department of natural resources, the director of the department of natural resources, and various agencies, boards, and commissions contained therein relating to natural resources management and environmental protection to the director of a new department of natural resources.|

The director oversees the Department of Natural Resources, which "is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural and cultural resources for current and future generations."
The four priorities of the DNR are:
