A Michigan Gas Tax Amendment, Proposal M, was on the November 1978 ballot in Michigan as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment, where it was approved.
  • Yes: 1,478,316 (54.52%)Approveda
  • No: 1,233,196 (45.49%)

Proposal M allocated at least 90% of gas tax revenues for general road purposes and the remainder for other transportation purposes; and replace state highway commission with transportation commission.
