Minnesota GOP files lawsuit on redistricting
By Kyle Maichle
ST. PAUL, Minnesota: Several Republicans in Minnesota have filed a lawsuit involving redistricting on January 21, 2011, in state court. The GOP's lawsuit is the second legal challenge filed over redistricting.
On January 12, 2011, four Democrats filed a separate redistricting lawsuit in federal court. Attorneys for the plaintiffs raise concerns if politicians can draw the lines in a fair manner. The Democrats lawsuit asks the court to invalidate the current political boundaries and require leaders to submit their redistricting plans to the court. Also, Republicans are seeking to intervene as plaintiff's in the redistricting suit filed in federal court.
Minnesota's eight congressional seats and 201 districts in the state legislature will have to be shifted to reflect the updated populations in 2011.
