JACKSON, Mississippi: The petition deadline for the Mississippi Voter Identification Petition (2010) is only weeks away and petition supporters still have a minimum of approximately 55,000 signatures to collect. According to Mississippi Republican Party Chairman Brad White 35,000 signatures have already been verified.[1] The proposed measure, if approved by voters, would require Voter ID at the polls in the state. The measure is sponsored by Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann and Sen. Joey Fillingane for the 2010 statewide ballot after the Mississippi State Senate failed to take action on the proposal.

The deadline for the November 2010 ballot is October 1, 2009. If initiative supporters miss the October deadline then signatures may be submitted by February 2010 for the November 2011 ballot.[2]
