Missouri Secretary of State clears tobacco tax initiative for petition circulation
SPRINGFIELD, Missouri: A 36th filed initiative has been cleared for petition circulation for the 2012 statewide ballot. On Monday, June 13 the Secretary of State Robin Carnahan gave the green light to an initiated state statute proposing to impose an additional $1 tax on each package of twenty cigarettes.
According to the filed language, the generated funds would be directed towards tobacco education and cessation programs. Additionally, funds would be used for enforcement and the administration of the Master Settlement Agreement.
To qualify for the ballot, the initiative requires signatures from registered voters equal to 5% of the total votes cast in the 2008 governor's election from six of the state's nine congressional districts. Signatures on behalf of all initiative petitions for the 2012 ballot are due to the secretary of state’s office by no later than 5 p.m. on May 6, 2012.
