OMAHA, Nebraska: Senator Dave Pankonin announced his resignation on August 31, 2011, citing more time needed with his family's agricultural equipment dealership as well as additional responsibilities at the Home State Bank in Louisville. His resignation will go into effect on October 7, 2011. Pankonin was first elected to the Nebraska State Senate in 2006 and won re-election in 2010.[1]

The vacancy left by Pankonin's resignation will be filled by Governor Dave Heineman. Heineman is asking for qualified applicants to submit an online application on the governor's website by no later than Friday, September 23rd. The appointed senator will then serve until January 8, 2013, with the seat up for re-election to a two-year term in November 2012.[2]
