The New Mexico Department of Education oversees public K-12 education and public libraries in New Mexico. The department managed 828 schools and 323,066 K-12 students during the 2010-11 school year.[2]

New Mexico Public Education Commission

The New Mexico Public Education Commission is comprised of ten members who are elected to serve staggered terms of four years. Each member is elected from one of ten Public Education Commission districts and must live within the district they are elected from. The Governor may appoint residents of a district to serve a vacant position within that district. The Commission is advisory to the Secretary of Education and serve as the authorizers for all state chartered charter schools in New Mexico.[6]
