Primary: New York is 1 of 12 states to use a strictly closed primary process, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is limited to registered party members.[1][2][3]

Voter registration: Voters must register to vote in the primary by May 30, 2014, for the federal primary, and August 15, 2014, for the state primary.[4]

Incumbent: Heading into the election the incumbent is Richard Hanna (R), who was first elected in 2010.

New York's 22nd Congressional District is located in the central portion of the state and includes Chenango, Cortland, Madison and Oneida counties and parts of Broome, Herkimer, Tioga and Oswego counties.[5]

On November 6, 2012, Richard Hanna (R) won re-election to the United States House. He is running in the 22nd District due to redistricting in 2011. He defeated Dan Lamb in the general election.
