Primary: New York is 1 of 12 states to use a strictly closed primary process, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is limited to registered party members.[1][2][3]

Voter registration: Voters must register to vote in the primary by May 30, 2014, for the federal primary, and August 15, 2014, for the state primary.[4]

Incumbent: Heading into the election the incumbent is Louise Slaughter (D), who was first elected in 1986.

New York's 25th Congressional District is located in the western portion of the state and includes most of Monroe County.[5]

On November 6, 2012, Louise Slaughter (D) won re-election to the United States House. She ran in the 25th District due to redistricting. She defeated Maggie Brooks in the general election.
