RICHMOND, Virginia: At a meeting during the week of April 23, the Virginia Beach City Council voted to place a voted referendum on this November's ballot asking voters if the approve of the idea of bringing The Tide, a light rail system, from Norfolk to the city. According to Hampton Roads Transit, who own The Tide, extending the rail by 12 miles to the Oceanfront would cost about $807 million and extending the light rail to Town Center would cost $254 million. The referendum is being placed on the ballot primarily to survey public response to the idea, as the city council will have the final say.[1]
