BISMARK, North Dakota: After years of debate and proposals for a ballot measure, a North Dakota Supreme Court ruling and a Board of Higher Education decision retired the University of North Dakota's nickname. The state court ruled that the university board had the authority to drop the name.[1] On April 8 a motion to reconsider retiring the nickname died after the measure was not seconded.[2] The board had originally voted in May 2009 to retire the name, causing lawsuits and heated debate.[3]
