Clay County outperforms the rest of Missouri in terms of higher education attainment, median income and poverty rate. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 30.6% of Clay County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 25.8% rate for the state of Missouri. Clay County had a median income of $60,560 in 2010 compared to $47,333 for Missouri. The poverty rate for Clay County was 8.3% in 2010 compared to a 15.0% rate for the rest of the state.[2]

Superintendent

The current superintendent of North Kansas City Schools is Todd White, who was appointed to the position in July 2008. He had previously been serving as the district's deputy superintendent.[4]

Members of the North Kansas City School Board are elected at-large to three-year terms. Two seats were up for election in April 2013; Board Vice President Terry Ward and member Terry Stone were elected to the board. Two seats will be on the ballot on April 8, 2014 and three seats in April 2015.

Academic performance

For the 2012-2013 school year, North Kansas City Schools students earned an average Missouri Assessment Program index score of 340.4. Students scored highest in science with an index score of 356.5, but they scored lowest in social studies with an index score of 310.2. The district's average MAP index score ranked 295 out of the 469 Missouri school districts that reported scores for all four tested subject areas.[9]

Issues

Year-round school

In November 2013, two North Kansas City elementary schools opted to implement year-round schooling in order to see greater achievement gains. Instead of getting a nine-week summer break, students will get a break of four weeks in June and July; the implementation process could begin as early as 2015. North Kansas City Schools will be the only district in Missouri to have year-round schooling.[10]
