Oakley Referendum on Cedarwood Estates (2010)
Some Oakley residents circulated a petition and collected more than 1,600 signatures to require a vote that could reverse the Oakley City Council's approval of Cedarwood Estates, which is a proposed 34-home development project on Knox Lane to be built by Discovery Builders.
1,401 signatures of registered voters are required to put the measure on the ballot and election officials for Contra Costa County are checking the signatures that were submitted.
Robert Fierros is a leader in the effort to put the Cedarwood Estates development up for a vote. He says that residents are concerned about the use of so-called "flag lots" in the development and about the density of development. A flag lot is a square parcel that is accessible off a long driveway. People who object to flag lots say that they can create traffic hazards and make it difficult for emergency vehicles.
