The Ohio Department of Education oversees public K-12 education and public libraries in Ohio. The department managed 4,237 schools and 1,764,297 students during the 2012-13 school year.[2]

The State Board of Education’s vision is for all Ohio students to graduate from the PK-12 education system with the knowledge, skills and behaviors necessary to successfully continue their education and/or be workforce ready and successfully participate in the global economy as productive citizens. State Board of Education

The Ohio State Board of Education is composed of 19 members serving four-year terms. Eleven members are elected from each of the eleven single member districts and eight are appointed by the Governor. The Superintendent of Education serves as secretary of the State Board of Education. The Board creates policy and makes recommendations for K-12 education in Ohio. The chairs of the education committees of the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate serve as non-voting ex officio members.[5][6]
