Oro Valley Home Rule Option Measure (March 2010)
This measure was approved
- YES 6,754 (72.69%)
- NO 2,538 (27.31%)
This measure sought to renew the Home Rule option that was adopted by Oro Valley residents in 1982. The home rue option allows Oro Valley to set its own budget apart from the state and gives the town more control over their laws and governing. If the measure had not passed, the budget of Oro Valley would have been cut nearly in half in order to comply with state laws. Home rule does not increase town taxes, it just ensures the town government is allowed to continue to function on its own. It is estimated that a loss of $76 million, or about 60% of its budget would have occurred if home rule was not approved. City officials were trying to inform voters as much as possible in the hopes for a positive vote on the issue.
