State legislative elections

11,099 candidates qualified to run for the 4,958 house seats that were up for election on November 2, 2010.

The figures in the chart below represent the number of candidates who qualified to run for office by going through the steps necessary to secure a spot on the ballot. Those steps differ from state-to-state but in most cases, nominating signatures must be filed. In some cases, candidates who had filed to run for state senate withdrew their candidacy or had their name removed from the ballot because of a successful challenge to their nominating signatures.

Breakdown by political party

The table below shows how many candidates that have qualified to be on the ballot to run for a lower house position in their state legislature. The listing shows major and minor parties that are recognized by their state's election authority. Not all minor parties are qualified in every state.

Note that in this chart, the total number of candidates that filed to run for office in a particular state does not give the reader any information about the distribution of these candidates over the different senate seats up for election in that state. As an example, in a state with 20 Republican candidates and 20 state house elections, you can't infer that a Republican ran in each of the state's 20 senate elections. Rather, the figure of 20 Republicans might mean that 5 Republicans ran in one primary and in 4 districts, no Republican filed to run.
