Ray Michaelson was a successful candidate for the seat G member position of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School Board. He was opposed by incumbent Seat G member David Cheezem.


Ray Michaelson is a graduate of Dimond High School in Anchorage, AK. He earned his bachelor's degree from Gonzaga University in 1982 and received his Alaska Teaching Certification the same year. Michaelson is married to his wife Jenny and they have three children Gregory, Aubrey, and Helen. He works for the State of Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice as a the Mat-Su District Supervisor, Quality Assurance/Training Manager, and Superintendent of the Mat-Su Youth Facility. He has served as a coach for multiple area youth football and soccer teams. He has served as a board member for Mat-Su Recovery/AK Family Resource Center, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School Board, and Mat-Su Borough Human Services Matching Grant Committee.[1]

Ray Michaelson was running opposed by one candidate, David Cheezem for the Seat G position in the general election on October 1, 2013.[2]


As of September 25, 2013, Michaelson has not disclosed any campaign finance expenditures or contributions to the Alaska Secretary of State.[3]

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District is located approximately 35 miles north of Anchorage in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough in an area commonly known as the “Valley.” The district spans approximately 25,000 square miles, an area larger than the entire state of West Virginia. According to the 2010 Census it is home to approximately 88,995 residents.[4]


Matanuska-Susitna Borough underperforms the rest of Alaska based on percentage of people below poverty level, but outperforms the rest of Alaska in high school graduation rates and median household income. The median household income for Matanuska-Susitna Borough is $70,343 when compared to $69,014 for the state of Alaska. The percentage of people below poverty level for Matanuska-Susitna Borough is 9.7% while it is 9.5% for the state of Alaska. 92.3% of persons over the age of 25 have a high school degree, while 91.4% of Alaska residents have a high school degree. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 20.9% of Matanuska-Susitna Borough residents aged 25 or older have a bachelor's degree, while the same rate is 27.2% for the state of Alaska.
