PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island: The House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare held a hearing on a bill that would name calamari the official appetizer of Rhode Island.[1]

The bill was sponsored by Representative Joseph McNamara (D) and received supporting testimony from the state's Department of Environmental Management assistant director Robert Ballou. Ballou said that the 17.5 million pounds of squid brought in annually is valued at $18 million and is the most valuable commercial fishery.[1]

There was no dissenting voice present at the hearing, and no action was taken on the bill.[1]
