The Rhode Island Superior Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction in Rhode Island.[1][2]

Jurisdiction

The superior courts have jurisdiction over felonies, civil matters where the amount in controversy exceeds $10,000, and in matters of equity. Jurisdiction is concurrent with the Rhode Island District Court on civil matters with amounts in controversy from $5,000-$10,000. Superior courts may also hears appeals on cases from the district courts.[1][2]

Appeals of superior court rulings go directly to the Rhode Island Supreme Court.[2]

Districts

The five counties in Rhode Island are divided into four judicial districts:

  • Rhode Island Kent Judicial District
  • Rhode Island Washington Judicial District
  • Rhode Island Newport Judicial District
  • Rhode Island Providence/Bristol Judicial District

The justices of the superior court can serve in any of the four districts.[1][2]

Judges

The superior court has one presiding justice, twenty-one associate justices and five magistrate judges. Judges receive office via the merit method.[1][2][3]
