Richard "Kinky" Friedman (b. November 1, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois) was a Democratic candidate for Texas Agriculture Commissioner in the 2014 elections. He previously ran for Governor in 2006 as an independent.

Biography

A rancher, musician, actor and writer, Friedman became known for his irreverent and satirical country songs during the 1970s. He has written for Rolling Stone and Texas Monthly magazines, as well as penning several novels.[1]

Friedman ran for election to the office of Texas Agriculture Commissioner. Friedman came in second for the Democratic nomination in the primary on March 4, 2014. He lost to Jim Hogan in a runoff on May 27.[2] The general election takes place November 4, 2014.

Friedman previously ran for Governor of Texas in 2006 as an independent.[3] Friedman earned over 500,000 votes, netting him 12.4% of the vote and fourth place among five candidates.[4]
