Campaign themes

In response to a survey conducted by The Hub Independent, Campbell argued that the following was the most significant issue confronting the school district:[2]

The main issue facing the Middletown school system is to continue to provide quality education for the students as well as hiring and retaining the best teachers possible while being fiscally responsible to the community.

What was at stake?

There were three seats on the school board up for election on November 5, 2013. Incumbents Christopher J. Aveta, Vincent S. Brand and John Bennett, Jr. all filed for re-election to keep their seats and competed with seven newcomers in the at-large race. Challengers Michael A. Donlon, Richard G. Campbell and Michael Craig ran unsuccessfully in 2012 for seats on the Middletown Township school board.

Therefore, the Census allows citizens to report both their race and that they are from a "Hispanic or Latino" place of origin simultaneously. As a result, the percentages in each column of the racial demographics table will exceed 100 percent. Each column will add up to 100 percent after removing the "Hispanic or Latino" place of origin percentages.[6]
