Williams worked part-time in high school at Williams Sawmill. In college, he spent two summers working for Unocal on offshore oil platforms near Nikiski. Williams also served in the Peace Corps in Gambia teaching math.
He returned to the U. S. and taught math in New York City during a two-year fellowship at Columbia University. Upon returning to Alaska, Williams continue to teach math in Nome and Mat-Su.
He is currently studying for a PhD in Public Policy and Administration.

Williams is running for election to the office of Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. Williams is seeking the Democratic nomination in the primary on August 19, 2014. The general election takes place November 4, 2014.
Williams is married to Connie Williams, a counselor in the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and they have two children, Kevin and Cassidy. Williams speaks Mandinka, which he learned in the Peace Corps.
