NEW YORK CITY,New York:Democratic Senator, Chuck Schumer has recommended Ray Kelly to President Obama as a replacement for Janet Napolitano, the Department of Homeland Security secretary. Napolitano is leaving after four years to head the University of California system.

Ray Kelly is the current New York Police Department commissioner. Schumer has previously recommended Kelly for a job as FBI director.[1]

According to Schumer, the Department of Homeland Security secretary “needs to be someone who knows law enforcement, understands anti-terrorism efforts, and is a top-notch administrator, and at the NYPD Ray Kelly has proven that he excels in all three.”[2]

Democratic mayoral candidate,Anthony Weiner, supports Kelly for the cabinet position, while democratic mayoral candidate, Christine Quinn, wants to keep Kelly as commissioner.[1]

Kelly has not publicly expressed an opinion either way, leading some to believe he would consider taking the position.[2]
