Smith is running for Governor of Arizona on the slogan "Conservative Leadership for Arizona."[5] One of the recurring themes of his campaign is "Proven leadership, proven results."[6][1] He is seeking the Republican nomination in the primary election on August 26, 2014. The general election takes place November 4, 2014.

The Arizona Governor seat is open in 2014 because Republican incumbent Jan Brewer is barred by term-limits from running for re-election.
