BIRMINGHAM, Alabama: Two legislative vacancies in the Alabama House of Representatives will be filled in special elections in November.[1]

This week Governor Robert Bentley called the special elections for November 29. The two legislators no longer in office are:

  • Owen Drake (R): Drake passed away last month. Drake died after a battle with cancer.[2]
  • Greg Canfield (R): Canfield was appointed last week as director of the Alabama Development Office.[1]

A primary will occur on August 30, 2011 with the primary runoff on October 11 (if necessary) and the general election on November 29. However, if no primary runoff is required, then the general election will be on October 11.[1]

There have been more than 70 special elections scheduled in state legislatures during 2011.
