St. Charles School District bond issue referendum, 2009
The measure was defeated by a margin of 47% in support (5,261 votes) to 53% (5,872 votes) against.
If voters had approved the measure, Thompson and Wredling middle schools would be remodeled, and Haines Middle School and Davis Elementary School would be torn down for new buildings erected in their place. The total cost of these projects would be $114 million.
Citizens for Fiscal and Academic Responsibility opposed the bond. Brian Litteral of the group said, "It's disheartening to see such a betrayal of the public trust, especially when the economy is so shaken and people are struggling. We really should be pulling together as a community instead of having to fend off taxpayer abuse."
