Dove ran in the 2012 election for Illinois State Senate District 50. Dove was running against Gray Noll and District 49 incumbent William McCann in the Republican primary on March 20, 2012, but he withdrew from the race on February 10, 2012. Incumbent Larry Bomke is not running for re-election in District 50. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.
