Steven S. Choi (b. January 15, 1944) is the current mayor of Irvine, California. He was first elected to the position in 2012. Before becoming mayor, Choi was a member of the Irvine City Council from 2004-2012 and served as a Trustee of the Irvine Unified School District from 1998-2004.


Choi earned his B.A. from Kyung Hee University in Seoul, South Korea, his M.A. in Library Science from Louisiana State University and his Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh. His professional experience includes working as a Peace Corps language instructor, college professor and operating Kumon Math and Reading Centers.[1]

The city of Irvine, California held elections for mayor on November 4, 2014. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was August 8, 2014.[3] Incumbent Steven S. Choi defeated Katherine Daigle and Mary Ann Gaido.[4][5]

Choi ran in the 2010 election for California State Assembly District 70. Choi was defeated by Donald P. Wagner in the Republican primary election on June 8, 2010.[6][7]
