City Council

The Tacoma City Council is made up of 8 members serving four year terms. Five members represent districts and three are elected at-large. The city government runs under a council-manager system.[11]

Mayor

The Mayor of Tacoma is Marilyn Strickland. She took office on January 5, 2010 after serving on the City Council for two years.

  • Violation of Ethics Code
    • Tacoma’s citizen Board of Ethics ruled that Strickland violated the ethics code when she used a businessman's frequent flier miles for an official business trip to South Korea in 2011.[12]
  • Criticism over calling GOP "Racist"
    • While giving remarks to Pacific Lutheran University college students Mayor Strickland said that the GOP has trouble courting black voters because they are racist.[13]

City Manager

The current City Manager for Tacoma is T.C. Broadnax. He started on February 13, 2012 after five years as the Assistant City Manager for San Antonio.[14] His salary as Assistant City Manager was $164,000.[15] Broadnax's contract runs through 2014 with an optional 2 year extension. The salary is $221,208 ($210,248 after a 5% reduction in 2012) along with 22 days of leave, $550 car allowance, health benefits, 401k match up to three percent of salary, and other general expenses paid. The contract also provides $25,000 for moving expenses and a $20,000 allowance once he buys a house. If fired before the contract was complete he would earn nine months of severance pay for $165,906 .[16]

Broadnax succeeds interim City Manager Rey Arellano who served briefly after 6 years of Eric Anderson. Arellano took home $66,000 in severance and unused paid time off after his resignation.[17] After the City Council failed to renew his contract after six years, Anderson was entitled to $235,373 along with $23,924 in unused vacation and sick days.[18]
