Ted Downing (b. February 22, 1943) was a Independent candidate for District 28 of the Arizona State Senate. The primary election was on August 24, 2010, and the general election was on November 2, 2010.[1]

Downing was a member of the Senator Andy Nichols Campaign Committee. He was a candidate for the Arizona House of Representatives in 2000 but was not elected. He was elected in 2002 and served two terms in the Arizona House. He then ran for election to the Arizona State Senate in 2008 but was not successful.


Downing earned his B.A. from Beloit College in 1965, his M.A. from Stanford University in 1966 and his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Stanford University in 1973.

Downing has worked as a Short-Order Cook, Dirt Farmer, Custodian, Chauffer, and Consultant for Inter-American Developmental Bank. He then worked in the following positions: Scientific Team Director for Mexican National Science Foundation from 1977 to 1979, Visiting Scholar at Oxford University in 1983, for the Fulbright Teaching Program in 1984, Faculty of the Hydrology and Water Resources area of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Arizona and staff member of the Arizona State Museum from 1971 to 1992, Policy Consultant for The World Bank from 1986 to 1997, Policy Consultant for International Finance Corporation from 1995 to 1997, Information Officer for the Southern Arizona American Radio Relay League from 1996 to 1998, and Policy Consultant for the United Nations Food and Agricultural Research Organization in 1999. Downing has also worked as Interdisciplinary Research Professor of Social Development at the University of Arizona since 1971. He is currently employed as President of a software development business.

Downing was defeated by incumbent Paula Aboud (D) in the November 2 general election.[2]
