Jennifer Wexton (D) defeated John Whitbeck (R) and Joe T. May (I) in the special election, which took place on January 21.[1][2][3]

The seat was vacant following Mark Herring's (D) election as Attorney General of Virginia.

A special election for the position of Virginia State Senate District 33 was called for January 21. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was December 26, 2013.[4]
