Located in the southern Midwest region of the United States, Texas is bordered by New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mexico. Nicknamed “the Lone Star state,” Texas was the 18th state admitted to the Union in 1845. While Austin is Texas’s capital, the city of Houston is the largest city in Texas. Overall, Texas is the second most populous state in the U.S. and the second largest of the fifty U.S. states. Currently, there are two Republican members of the U.S. Senate, a total of 36 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 31 members of the Texas State Senate and 150 members of the Texas House of Representatives. As of September 2013, Texas is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.
