The Judicial Update

April 30, 2012

Texas: In April, the American Bar Association (ABA) presented the 2012 Grassroots Advocacy Award to the Texas Supreme Court. Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson and Justice Nathan Hecht prioritized funding for Legal Aid in 2011, working with lawmakers to make sure that money was appropriated for indigent defense. Of the award, Chief Justice Wallace said, "We’ve been working diligently to increase the effort of providing services to indigent Texans. If this recognition can further those efforts here in Texas, or serve as a model in other states, we’re very pleased about that."[1]

The organization also awarded Betty Balli Torres, of the Texas Access to Justice Foundation, with the award.[1]
