The Texas Tribune is a website that focuses on state politics and policies in Texas. It was launched on November 3, 2009. The online news website is sponsored by a 501(c)(3) corporation.

The website has attracted national attention because it offers news through a non-profit model at a time when its main for-profit competitors, such as the Houston Chronicle, the Dallas Morning News and the Austin American Statesman, are experiencing a decline in circulation numbers and profitability.[1]

Funding

The Texas Tribune raised $3.7 million through November 2009 from these sources:

  • John Thornton, who has given $1,000,000. Thornton is a Democratic Party donor and a venture capitalist based in Austin.[2]
  • The Houston Endowment, which provided $500,000.
  • The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which gave the organization $250,000.[1]
