Smith was first elected to the Pittsburgh City Council in 2009. She serves as Council President Pro Tempore and chairperson of the Committee on Public Safety Services. Prior to her tenure as councilwoman, Smith worked for a number of nonprofits, including the Pittsburgh Public Schools and the Neighborhood Learning Alliance.[1]

The city follows a mayor-council form of government.[4][5] The mayor earns an annual salary of $108,000.[6] According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Pittsburgh's unemployment rate as of July 2013 was 7.5%, compared to the state rate of 7.8% and the national rate of 7.7%.[7]
