Thomas G. Nelson is a former federal appeals judge with the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He joined the court in 1990 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Nelson passed away on May 4, 2011, while serving on senior status.[1][2]


Nelson graduated from Idaho Law with his law degree in 1962.[2]

Military service

Nelson served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1965 to 1968.[2]


Nelson began his career as an assistant state attorney general and chief deputy state attorney general for the Idaho Attorney General's Office from 1963 to 1965. From 1965 to 1990, he served as an attorney in private practice.[2]

Federal judicial career

Nelson was nominated by President George Bush on July 18, 1990 to a seat vacated by Judge J. Blaine Anderson. Nelson was confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate on October 12, 1990, and received commission on October 17, 1990.[3] Nelson assumed senior status on November 14, 2003.[2]
