Schlekeway ran in the 2012 election for South Dakota State Senate District 11. Schlekeway ran unopposed in the Republican primary on June 5. Tom Cool ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. Schlekeway withdrew prior to the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.
Schlekeway was eligible for re-election but instead sought the District 11 state senate seat. He defeated Tom Cool in the November 2 general election.
