Wells ran in the 2012 election for Michigan House of Representatives District 5. She is running against Renard Berry, Fred Durhal, Jr., Cynthia Ann Johnson, Mark Murphy, Jr., and Nathaniel Nathan in the Democratic primary on August 7.
A questionnaire distributed by the League of Women Voters asked the candidates to provide information about their legislative priorities and proposed actions regarding those priorities. Wells responded that advocating for compulsory assistance to public school bus drivers of special education students is her top priority: "I will make sure senate bill 608 passes in the state house and state senate that will require all school districts to have a bus attendant (or other adult personnel) on each bus route "that is being used to provide special education transportation required under this article, at lease 1 person in addition to the driver is assigned to assist the driver."
