The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is a United States agency formed in 1970 " to serve the President of the United States in implementing his vision across the Executive Branch." The OMB reports directly to the president and is the largest element of the Office of the President.[1] The current director of the OMB is Shaun Donovan, who was confirmed by the Senate on July 9, 2014.[2]

The OMB employed 461 people in 2012.[3] The office originated from the Bureau of the Budget, formed in 1921 as part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.[4]

The OMB was officially formed in 1970, deriving its duties from the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Bureau of the Budget. President Richard Nixon reorganized the Bureau of the Budget into the Office of the President creating the current OMB. Notable directors of the OMB who later held higher offices are George Shultz (Secretary of State), Caspar Weinberger (Secretary of Defense), Jack Lew (Secretary of the Treasury) and Leon Panetta (Secretary of Defense).[4]

The official OMB mission statement is as follows:

The core mission of OMB is to serve the President of the United States in implementing his vision across the Executive Branch.[1][5]

Shaun Donovan is currently the director of the OMB.
